Firefighters have now contained a fire in Red Deer at the Red Deer Ironworks building on Golden W Avenue.

The fire started at around 10:43 a.m. on Wednesday morning, causing black smoke to cover surrounding areas.

So far no injuries have been reported and it is believed that everyone got out of the building safely.

About 80 homes nearby were voluntarily evacuated during the start of the fire. Residents are now able to return home, but smoke may persist into the evening. Officials suggest staying inside and keeping windows closed until the air quality improves.

The building, including the repair shop, has been declared a loss.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
