Let me tell you about my buddy Dave. Dave runs a small electronics shop in Kensington. He’s a nice guy who always tells me how his neighbourhood is “super safe” and how he’s “never had any problems.” He used to laugh when I mentioned getting some actual security. Guess who called me at 3 am last month, freaking out because someone smashed his back window and cleared out half his inventory? Yeah. Dave.
But hey, I’m not here to shame the guy. Truth is, MOST Calgary business owners don’t realize they need security services until after they’re already screwed.
1. You’ve got that “it won’t happen to me” attitude
Seriously, this is a killer. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard: “This is a good area!” “We’ve never had problems before!” “Everyone knows everyone here!” Cool story. Tell that to the guy who’s currently pawning your stuff. Crime doesn’t stay neatly contained in “bad neighbourhoods.” It moves, evolves, opportunities pop up, and suddenly, your “safe” business is an easy target. When that coffee shop down the street installs cameras or the boutique, next door hires a night guard… pay attention. They might know something you don’t. If you have a business you are always in need of security services.
2. Your employees are playing musical chairs
High turnover is a security NIGHTMARE.
Think about it – how many former employees still have keys? Know your alarm code? Remember where you hide the petty cash? Worse, how many were left feeling pissed off?
I had this one client, a sporting goods store. I couldn’t figure out why inventory kept disappearing even with decent locks. It turns out that an ex-manager who got fired six months back kept his keys and helped himself to merchandise every couple of weeks.
Watch for unexplained missing stuff.
3. You’ve got the good stuff
Not gonna sugarcoat this: If you’ve got expensive crap, you’re a target.
Phones. Laptops. High-end retail. Pharmaceuticals. Cash. Even copper wiring if you’re in construction.
Met this guy with a tech startup with hundreds of thousands of equipment “protected” by a regular office door lock. He genuinely couldn’t understand why that was insane.
Ask yourself: Would your business survive if all your valuable stuff disappeared overnight? Many don’t.
4. You’re the last one standing
Late hours? Isolated location? The industrial area that empties at 5 pm?
Congratulations! You’ve won the “perfect target” lottery!
Nothing makes thieves happier than darkness and no witnesses. Strip mall businesses where employees leave at 2 am carrying deposits are begging for trouble.
I had a restaurant client whose manager got cornered in the parking lot last year. The poor guy quit on the spot. Now they close an hour earlier and have a security escort for night deposits. They should’ve done it BEFORE someone got traumatized.
5. You’ve already been hit once
Lightning doesn’t strike twice, but criminals do.
Statistics don’t lie – businesses that get hit once are way more likely to get hit again. Why? Because now the bad guys know:
- How to get in
- Where the good stuff is
- What your security weaknesses are
- That you’ll replace everything with shiny new items
Second hits usually happen 3-6 months after the first. Just enough time for you to restock and feel safe again.
Look, I’m not trying to freak you out. OK, I may be a little. But only because I’m sick of getting those middle-of-the-night panic calls from business owners who could’ve prevented the whole mess.
Security isn’t the thing. Nobody starts a business excited about surveillance systems and access protocols. But I promise it’s cheaper than replacing everything you’ve worked for.
