A male teen is now facing charges after bringing a handgun into a park in Surrey over the weekend.

RCMP officers say they were called to 135A Street for reports of suspicious activity outside a shelter. They were informed that someone involved in verbal dispute nearby may have possession of a firearm.

The Mounties responding to the reports found the teen in Whalley Athletic Park.

They chased the teen on foot and took the 17-year-old boy into custody. At his time of his arrest, the teen had a loaded 9mm handgun.

No one was injured during the arrest.

The teen is in custody and now faces a number of charges. These include possession of an unauthorized weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting a peace officer and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.
